Frequently Asked Questions

Insurance Coverage

Q: What insurance do you take?
A: We are participating providers with most (but not all) major Western PA insurance companies. Please call our office for details or browse the names of some of the insurance companies we accept.

Pain Management

Q: I very much do not like pain. Is there a way to avoid it?
Dentistry should not hurt in this day and age. There is a whole regiment of new medications available now. We can go over the options during your initial visit and find the one or combination that is best for you.

Teeth Whitening

Q: My teeth are stained and look yellow. Do I have options?
A: Yes. We do both in-office and take home whitening procedures. Based on the immediacy of your needs and personal preferences, any one of our approaches is capable of delivering superior results. Dr. Schmeler and her staff are prepared to assist you with your selection.

Time

Q: My work is demanding and I am very busy. How much time will I need to set asside for a dental visit?
A: Some procedures can be performed in less than 15 minutes, but most will take between 30 minutes and an hour. Dr. Schmeler strives to keep the duration of dental visits to under an hour in consideration of her patients’ comfort. For procedures known to take longer than an hour, Dr. Schmeler will encourage her patients to schedule multiple appointments.

Sterilization

Q: How do I know all instruments are clean and sterile?
A: Instruments are sterilized in autoclaves or "ovens" that reach temperatures greater than 620° F after every patient examination.

Placements

Q: I accidentally chipped my front tooth. How can I fix it without making it look fake?
A: Depending on the nature of a break or fracture there are several options ranging from porcelain veneers to crowns, and or bonding. We consider individual lifestyles when advising on options so that the patient can select the option that is best for him or her.

Kids

Q: One of my children is 2. When should I take them in for their first visit?
A: We routinely see children as young as 2 1/2 years old. Usually parents bring in their child (sometimes with an older sibling) when they come in for a routine check-up.

Office

Q: What are your office hours?
A: We are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Q: Where exactly in Shadyside are you located?
A: We are conveniently located on the corner of Copeland and Walnut streets next door to Starbucks Coffee Company. See the section on How to reach us for more information.
